Abstract

This perspective article examines Hybrid Intelligence as a model of the joint functioning of Human Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence in the digital economy, with particular attention to industrial systems, drawing on systems and institutional-evolutionary approaches. It shows that, as the effects of basic digitalization become exhausted, the transition from automation and data accumulation to sustainable human-AI decision-making loops becomes increasingly important. Hybrid Intelligence is interpreted in a dual sense: first, as a technological platform encompassing Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, edge computing, human-machine interfaces, and extended reality; and second, as an institutional phenomenon requiring new norms of responsibility, trust, competencies, and standards of use. The article reviews current adoption trends in industrial systems, including process-oriented settings and intelligent BPM systems, identifies key barriers such as cognitive gaps between humans and algorithms, infrastructure constraints, model opacity, and fragmentation of the institutional environment, and proposes an ecosystem-based concept for integrating Hybrid Intelligence within the human-centered logic of Industry 5.0. In this sense, the paper provides a conceptual basis for subsequent research on mechanisms for assessing the effectiveness of intelligent industrial systems.
